DO WE HAVE ANYTHING IN COMMON WITH SUPERHEROS?
There is one superhero that I think we do. Now I am no expert in comics or superheroes, but there is one thing that sets Batman apart from the other mainstream hero’s or at least the guy with the S on his chest, he doesn’t have any powers outside of a large bank account, cool technology and the drive to clean up the mean streets of Gotham. Don’t get me wrong, if my superpower was “large bank account guy,” I probably would be A-OKAY. However, Batman, he’s just a guy in a cool suit, Bruce. Well, depending on when you started watching Batman, terminology like “cool suit” could be a stretch as the Adam West version looked more like a poorly stitched-together kid’s costume (and his was “cool” compared to the few that came before him) than what we’ve come accustomed to seeing the Dark Knight rock these days. More on the suit in a bit.
The thing that draws me to Batman is his human nature. The fact that he isn’t always the strongest or the smartest. He just never gives up, keeps on fighting. It’s almost like there is something inside him that keeps driving him through the BOOMS and the KAPOWS. Batman took his life’s tragedy and decided to do something more, be something more, better his community, just a regular person who decided to be super. When it comes to being a Christain, we are all a little like Batman, trying to figure life out while building our Super Spiritual Powers – you know, things like, how many bible scriptures can you quote or can you sing this entire worship song on Sunday without looking at the words on the screen (not really super spiritual powers).
Now your probably wondering why you just spent the last few moments of your life reading a loosely relatable story about Batman. Well, I have an answer for you. First, we are in a great new series that looks at this concept of power and how the SAME POWER that raised Jesus from the dead also lives in us. So what do we do with it? How do we harness it? If you’re trying to figure that out, this series is for you! Watch on-demand, live online or in-person across any of our campuses.
The next thing, and as promised, I bring us back to the suit. Some of us are taking on life in the Adam West suit, faking it and hoping no one notices how ill-prepared we are to face life, one dryer cycle away from ruining our cape. Then others think we have it all sorted out, and things are looking good with our fancy, sleek suit full of gizmos and gadgets. However, in my humble opinion, we are all just humans, powerless without God, and that’s why regardless of what suit you think you have on, I recommend checking out The Thrive Experience.
